NFL athletes continue to lob criticisms at Giants’ Daniel Jones following a crushing loss.
The San Francisco 49ers, who beat the Giants and then told the world that Daniel Jones was overpaid, used the quarterback as a Twitter tackling dummy on Monday night after the Giants were humiliated in a 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium.
The advantage of living on the West Coast? Three more hours of hurling insults at Jones, it seems.
After the Giants gave up 11 sacks and Jones threw two interceptions — including a pick-six — they were booed off the field by what was left of the early departing crowd. 49ers defensive end Arik Armstead joined the chorus from 3,000 miles away.
“Daniel Jones I am so disappointed in you,” Armstead tweeted. “Why would you would throw the ball so quick vs. us and then let these people have a career day? ….. why weren’t we deserving?”
The Giants, in the 30-12 Thursday night loss on the road, gave up just two sacks to the Niners.
Jones, however, had to take it from both sides of the ball after Monday night’s loss. Former Giants center Jonathan Feliciano, also playing for the 49ers, tweeted: “Hate to see it.”
Except that he didn’t hate to see it. In May, the NFL account tweeted: “The NFL schedule drops this Thursday. Who do you want to see in Week 1?” Feliciano replied, “@Giants.”
When the Giants allowed Feliciano to walk in the off-season, he signed a one-year contract with the Niners.
Monday night’s Twitter mugging was a continuation of the 49ers’ targeting. After they beat the Giants, they lined up to insult Jones and questioned his four-year, $160 million contract, which guarantees him $82 million over the next two seasons.
“A lot of people who make all that money don’t even deserve it,” Niners linebacker Dre Greenlaw was quoted as saying to the San Francisco Chronicle. “I think they took a chance (when they paid him). I mean, he’s not bad. And if you ain’t got nothing better …”
Another unnamed 49er said, “The dude did not want to throw the ball. Early on, you could tell it wasn’t gonna happen. Everything was a check-down. At that point, we knew what time it was.” Other anonymous Niners called Jones’ salary “unbelievable,” “ridiculous” and “a travesty, man.”
But Jones refused to fire back.
“I guess some people are like that, where they feel the need to do that,” he said. “That’s fine. That’s part of it.”
Jones completed 22 of 32 passes for 137 yards and was sacked twice for minus-16 yards against the 49ers, who held him to five yards on two rushes. He was 27-for-34 for 203 yards, two interceptions and 10 sacks against the Seahawks, who poked Jones, too.
Rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who returned an interception 97 yards for a TD, said the Seahawks knew Jones “liked to stare down his first target.”
